Get Ready to Make Your Real Estate Dream Happen!

Happy New Year!

Have you been daydreaming of a big move? Maybe it’s buying your first home, or selling your big family home and downsizing to an easy-to-maintain condo. Or perhaps you’d just like a little pied-a-terre in the big city, or an investment property. Whatever it is, a dream without a plan is still just a dream. With a plan (and of course following through on that plan), you can make that dream a reality.

If you’re ready to commit to yourself, here are some things to work on this January. You may think scrolling real estate listings is the place to begin; I’d argue that this is almost the last step in your journey. Instead, here are my recommendations for you.

First, set a goal. Make it a SMART one. What do I mean by that? SMART is an acronym that will let you assess whether your goal is ready to go. It needs to be:

  • Specific (get as precise as you can)
  • Measurable (this will help you know how close you are, or when you’ve arrived)
  • Action-oriented (then you can break it down into steps)
  • Realistic (no lottery wins or pie-in-the-sky pipe dreams permitted)
  • Time-bound (by when do you want to make it happen)

Trust me, this is a time-honoured method that works. Set goals like this, and you’ll have a far better chance of achieving them than just saying, “I’d like to get into real estate this year”. And if it's not ready, fine-tune it. If it's too small, you're not challenging yourself. If it's too big, break it into steps. 

Once you know your goal, I can tell you that whether you are a buyer or a seller, you need to put together a team to help you. There’s an old saying that if you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together. It’s true! I wrote this prior blog post about who you need on your team, to get you started.
